AAUW (American Association of University Women) has been empowering women since 1881. AAUW is a nationwide network of more than 100,000 members and donors, 1,000 branches, and 500 college/university partners. Since its founding, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day – educational, social, economic, and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in all aspects of our work. AAUW MISSION To advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. ISSUES ADVOCACY AAUW works in partnership with diverse allies and participates in a coalition of women’s groups that lobby Congress on bills and resolutions that benefit women and families. AAUW advocates equality, individual rights and social justice for a diverse society. AAUW advocates for all women to achieve economic self-sufficiency. AAUW supports a strong system of public education that promotes gender fairness, equity, and diversity. AAUW supports vigorous enforcement of Title IX and all other civil rights laws pertaining to education. LOCAL PHILANTHROPY Our charitable efforts include offering scholarships to Pima Community College students and supporting AAUW National Funds. These contributions are made possible by donations and fundraising activities. February Program: Dora’s Story–Survival and Courage Presented by Dora Rodriguez Tuesday, February 18, 2020 Desert Hills Social Center 9 a.m. social time, 9:30 a.m. program In 1980, I was only 19 years old and had just finished high school when the civil war in El Salvador began. I left my country seeking safety in the USA with my cousin, uncle, and other Salvadorians. We left on a bus to the town of Sonoita, Mexico. It was July in one of the hottest summers in history. Although we were escorted by smugglers, we became lost in the desert. We wandered for six days in the desert in 120-degree temperatures with no water to drink. Thirteen of my travel companions died, including three young sisters aged 12, 14, and 16. Even with this tragedy and the civil war in my country, we were not granted asylum! Now, I’m the leader of an organization that helps migrants in border towns in Mexico. Every Monday, I visit detention centers to interview migrants for possible legal representation. We also have prevention programs in El Salvador with high school students and have been providing college assistance to a mother of a seven-year old boy. This woman was deported and she lost her seven- months pregnancy on her journey through Mexico. I love to share my story to bring awareness and open people’s hearts to this very sad and inhumane issue. Our organization is Salvavisionrescueaz and the website is https://Salvavision.org . Salvavision’s core mission is to provide help to the Salvadorian community residing in Arizona and El Salvador. Click here for a schedule of all programs . LUNAFEST 2020 –February 22nd! LUNAFEST is a festival of films by, for, and about women. It is a fun afternoon of socializing, tasty appetizers, a no-host bar, a variety of raffle items, and thought-provoking short films. LUNAFEST is the major fundraiser for our Philanthropy Fund and primarily benefits our Scholarship Fund for women attending Pima Community College Our fifth annual LUNAFEST will be on Saturday, February 22nd at the Community Performance & Art Center (CPAC). Doors open at 1:30 for refreshments and raffle. Screening of the films begins at 2:30. This year’s event will be even more special because the recipients of last spring’s scholarship awards will be present. Tickets, which are $25, will be available at our program meetings as well as at Posada Java, the Green Valley Chamber of Commerce, Nancy Pantz and the Book Shop at Green Valley Village. Get your tickets early as this event has always been a sell-out. As in past years we invite members to be SPONSORS of this event to help defray the cost of renting CPAC and other expenses.
